Delaware Public School System

The Delaware Public School system is failing. I know that it is not the result of poor teachers but rather a system that does not support teachers and does not support a learning environment in the school. As a therapist working with adolescents I see a number young people who struggle in school. They act out their difficulties and this further complicates their educational achievement. I am sure that these students as well as others can benefit from the creativity and initiative of teachers if this is allowed to thrive. I don’t have all the answers but do believe we need to make significant changes. These are some of my thoughts as a non teacher.
- Control Classroom sizes
- Make the schools more accessible to the parents
- Provide appropriate classroom aides to help teachers with students
- Have administrators enforce a culture of respect in the schools (students respect teachers and teachers respect students)
- Encourage and support innovation and creativity of the teachers
- Do away with DSTP
- Invest in the teacher and the classroom not in administrative functions
It would be presumptuous for me to believe that I have the answer but I do believe that those in the trenches do. Please give me your comments so that I can fight to improve our public school system.

Your list of prospective cures to our public school system is admirable. However, I have stood in the classrooms of our New Castle County schools and until the teachers are able to regain their authority in the classrooms, there will not be an atmosphere open to learning. The children are disrespectful, use vulgar language without accountability, roam about the room freely while children are trying to learn, and the violence and blatent sexual language are alarming. Behavior begins at home.
