Located in the northeastern reaches of the Sonoran Desert, Phoenix is home to major sports teams (the Diamondbacks, the Suns, the Cardinals), world-class golf courses, and some of the nation's best Mexican restaurants. With its arid climate, Phoenix is the hottest major U.S. city with high temperatures averaging over 100 °F for almost five months a year.
The early economy of Phoenix was primarily agricultural. In the last two decades, the economy has diversified. Since Phoenix is the capital of Arizona, many residents work for the state government. Arizona State University has also enhanced the area's population through education and its growing research capabilities. Phoenix is currently home to seven Fortune 1000 companies: Allied Waste, Avnet, Apollo Group, Freeport-McMoRan, PetSmart, Pinnacle West ,and CSK Auto. Honeywell's Aerospace division is headquartered in Phoenix, and the valley hosts many of their avionics and mechanical facilities.
The city is home to Phoenix Symphony Hall, which features performances by Arizona Opera and Ballet Arizona. Another popular venue is the Orpheum Theatre, home to the Phoenix Metropolitan Opera.
