Once a small farming community, San Jose drew many newcomers to the state from the 1960s through the '90s. Today it's Northern California's largest city. Home of the Rosicrucian Museum - the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts on display in the western United States - San Jose is also home to the Children's Discovery Museum and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library (the largest U.S. public library west of Mississippi River).
A hub of high technology, software development, and microprocessor companies, San Jose is the unofficial capital of Silicon Valley. Area schools such as the University of California, Berkeley, University of California, Santa Cruz, San José State University, San Francisco State University, California State University, East Bay, Santa Clara University, and Stanford University pump thousands of engineering and computer science graduates into the local economy every year.
Known for its dry, Mediterranean climate and proximity to the Bay Area, San Jose lists 25 companies with 1,000+ employees, including the headquarters of Adobe Systems, BEA Systems, Cisco, SunPower and eBay, as well as major facilities for Flextronics, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Hitachi and Lockheed Martin. Government employers include the city government, Santa Clara County, and San José State University.
