Boston

New England's economic and cultural hub, Boston is one of America's oldest cities, with a long, rich business and social history. Founded as a homesteading community, the city evolved into a center for social and political change.

Home to many institutions of higher education, some of the world's finest inpatient hospitals, and numerous cultural and professional sports organizations, Boston is sometimes called the unofficial "Capital of New England." Each year, millions of people visit Boston to take in its historic neighborhoods, attend cultural or sporting events, and conduct business. The city's economy is based on medicine, research, electronics, engineering, finance, and technology.

The city has a number of ornate theatres, including the Cutler Majestic Theatre, Boston Opera House, Citi Performing Arts Center, the Colonial Theater, and the Orpheum Theatre. Renowned performing-arts organizations include the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Ballet, Boston Early Music Festival, Boston Lyric Opera Company, OperaBoston, and the Handel and Haydn Society. At the other end of the musical spectrum, Boston is also one of the birthplaces of hardcore punk music.
