Charlotte, "The Queen City," is the largest city in North Carolina. Named in honor of the German Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg, consort to British King George III, Charlotte has become a major U.S. financial center over the past two decades.
Charlotte is home to Bank of America as well as numerous regional banking and financial services companies. The city's skyline has mushroomed in the past two decades and boasts the Bank of America Corporate Center, the tallest skyscraper between Philadelphia and Atlanta. The 60-story postmodern gothic tower, completed n 1992, stands 871 feet tall.
Numerous Fortune 500 companies are headquartered in the Charlotte metropolitan area, including Bank of America, Lowe's, Nucor (steel producer), Family Dollar, Goodrich Corporation, and SPX Corporation.
Charlotte is also a major motor sports center, with NASCAR having multiple offices in and around the city. Approximately 75% of the NASCAR industry's employees and drivers are based within two hours of downtown Charlotte.
