Las Vegas

"The Entertainment Capital of the World" welcomes almost 40 million visitors a year. Replete with luxury hotels and casinos, first-rate cuisine, fabulous shopping, opulent stage productions, gaming, and world-class golf courses, Las Vegas offers something for everyone. Founded as a stopover on the pioneer trails to the west, Las Vegas was at first a staging point for all the mines in the surrounding area that shipped their goods out to the rest of the country. In 1935, the completion of the nearby Hoover Dam, 30 miles southeast of the city, resulted in an explosion of residents and tourism. The dam forms Lake Mead, the world's largest man-made lake and reservoir - and an outstanding tourist destination.

If the great outdoors are your thing, you can hike Red Rock Canyon, ski Mt. Charleston, or take a day trip to the nearby Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, or Death Valley.

And just in case you've been living under a rock all your life and didn't know it, Las Vegas offers the world's finest entertainment. Big-name headliners include Barry Manilow, Celine Dion, Cirque du Soleil, Blue Man Group, and Penn & Teller.
