Houston

Houston's broad industrial base in energy, manufacturing, aeronautics, transportation, and health care is one reason why only New York City is home to more Fortune 500 headquarters. But Houston is so much more than just business. Main Street buzzes with cafes and live music. The Downtown Aquarium and Bayou Place are popular with locals and tourists alike. And Midtown, on downtown's southwest border, is quite the hot spot - home to nightclubs, restaurants, and live music venues such as the Continental Club and the Drink Bar. Houston hipsters flock to the Red Door for its famed rooftop terrace overlooking the downtown skyline. Rice Village, near Rice University, offers a variety of pubs and bars.

Quite the sports town, in 2005 the Houston Astros were the first Texas team ever to win the World Series. Seven-foot-six-inch Yao Ming has added a dose of star power to the Houston Rockets as one of the most popular players in the NBA.

Houston is one of five U.S. cities with resident companies in ballet, opera, classical music, and theatre. Houston's 17-block Theater District is home to all of them. For family fun, experience a "space shuttle landing" at Space Center Houston or "splash down" in more than 2 million gallons of water at Six Flags SplashTown. For history buffs there's the San Jacinto Battleground Complex where Texas won its independence from Mexico. Or step back in time more than a century at the George Ranch and experience Texas history.
