Known for great coffee, literate citizens, the Space Needle, and musical genius (Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain), this former shipbuilding hub's economy took a nosedive after World War II, then rose again with Boeing's dominance in airline manufacturing (Boeing was based there until 2001). The city celebrated its restored prosperity and made a bid for world recognition with the Century 21 Exposition at the 1962 World's Fair. Then the economy saw another downturn in the late 1960s. After many residents left to find elsewhere, two local real estate agents erected a billboard reading: "Will the last person leaving Seattle - Turn out the lights." Today, Six Fortune 500 companies are headquartered there: Washington Mutual, Amazon.com, Starbucks, Nordstrom, Safeco Corporation, and Expeditors International.
Home to the Seahawks and Mariners, Seattle boasts many festivals including the Seattle International Film Festival and the renowned art and music festival, Bumbershoot.
Coffee companies founded or based in Seattle include Starbucks, Seattle's Best Coffee, and Tully's. The city also hosts many independent cafes. Perhaps owing to all that coffee drinking, researchers at Central Connecticut State University ranked Seattle the most literate city of America's sixty-nine largest cities in 2005 and 2006.
